Nowadays, there’s access to so much information, you can read about any topic, at any time, with an explanation according to your level, you can find people, even a community that shares your beliefs and your view of the world; you can always read exactly what you want, and while this has lots of positive aspects, it also has an incredible downside. The thing is, we as humans tend to like only what agrees with our point of view, and without reading opposing points of view, there is no room for improvement, this effect is maximized by algorithms like the ones from youtube and medium which recommend you based on your search history, therefore, unpurposely confining you in a specific point of view, your point of view, making you prone to huge biases and frankly, ignorance, the worst type of ignorance; ignorance that turns into certainty.

We should read more of what disagrees with what we think, it’s a win-win, either you reaffirm what you already know by seeing how wrong and unsubstantiated the other point of view is, or you grow by realizing how flawed your opinion is, but most importantly, you question your beliefs. Because as Socrates said, “awareness of ignorance is the beginning of wisdom”.

It scares me that the younger generation is making decisions based on headlines and don’t know how to research and go on a fact-finding mission…

By promoting like-mindedness, the algorithms segment the conversation and isolate opinion.
