It’s Ok To Be All Over The Place As a Writer

Don’t Limit Yourself.

I think all of us who write have at some point asked ourselves the following questions: To which category do we belong as writers? What are the topics we tend to write about? And, why are we qualified to talk about this or that?

This is normal and can help us define our topics and have a more focused approach when coming up with new ideas. Besides, some of us just know more and are better at writing about certain things, so it makes sense for us to write about those rather than about the things we do not know much about.

And that’s all fair and good, but I think it can also cause some problems if you overthink it, or at least it has in my experience; questioning yourself too much and over-defining yourself as a writer can put you in a box, which can affect your creativity. So I think that while it’s necessary to be focused on what we write about, we should still allow ourselves to step out of our comfort zone every once in a while, both in terms of the topics we explore and the places we go creatively.
